Why Urine Tests Are Important
Healthcare providers may request a urine sample to diagnose or monitor various health conditions. Urine contains waste products filtered from the body, and any abnormalities can indicate underlying issues.
Common reasons for urine tests include:
- Monitoring conditions like type 2 diabetes
- Checking for urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- Confirming pregnancy
- Checking certain aspects of kidney or adrenal gland function
How To Collect A Proper Urine Sample
When providing a sample at our office, you’ll receive a container and instructions. If requested by phone or letter, you can pick up a container at reception. Follow these steps for a clean sample:
- Label the container with your name, birth date, and collection date
- Wash your hands thoroughly
- Clean your genital area to avoid contamination
- Begin urinating but don’t collect the initial stream
- Collect a mid-stream sample in the provided container
- Secure the lid tightly
- Wash your hands again
Deliver labeled samples promptly to reception. If unable to submit within an hour, refrigerate in a sealed bag for up to 24 hours to prevent bacterial growth.
Understanding Mid-Stream Samples
A mid-stream sample excludes the first and last parts of urination. This reduces contamination from:
- Bacteria on hands
- Bacteria around the urethra opening
Timeframe For Test Results
Simple dipstick tests provide quick results, often available immediately or within 24 hours. More complex lab tests may take up to 7 days. Our doctors review results daily and will contact you within 24 hours if there are concerns. We typically don’t notify patients of normal results.
